There is an old story about a farmer whose mule fell into a dry well. The farmer heard the mule ‘braying’ — and soon discovered his misfortune. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer decided that the mule wasn’t worth the time or expense needed to save it. Instead, he called his neighbours together and told them what had happened; and asked them to help haul dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.
Initially, the old mule was hysterical and started kicking! But as the dirt continued to hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back, he should shake it off and step up!
